Today’s Throwback Thursday photo takes us back to the 1995 women’s soccer season. On the cover of that year’s media guide is on the left, forward Kristi Cummings, in the middle, goalkeeper Jill Young, and on the right, midfielder Mary Milligan.
The trio helped lead the Bulldogs to the best season in school history. Asheville was one of the big stories in women’s soccer that year it finished with a 16-5-0 overall record and won the Big South Conference championship.
Michele Cornish’s club was picked to finish in last place that year but quickly showed it was going to be one of the top teams in the league with five wins to open the season, including a 2-1 win over SoCon champ Davidson. The Bulldogs lost an early-season showdown with league favorite UNC Greensboro, 3-2, but they would get their revenge later in the year.
Asheville finished the regular season in second place in the Big South and earned a bye into the tournament. The Bulldogs whipped UMBC 3-0 in the semifinals and then faced the nationally-ranked Lady Spartans in the championship game in Greensboro.
Young, a member of the school’s and Big South’s Hall of Fame, was brilliant in goal for the Blue & White. Freshman Ashley Hart scored early in the second half for the Bulldogs and that was enough for Asheville to earn its first ever Big South soccer championship, 1-0.
