ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Seven straight home matches to open the season, including exhibition contests with Appalachian State and Clemson highlights the 2014 UNC Asheville men’s soccer schedule that was released today by Bulldog head coach Matt Kern.
Kern’s club will play under the lights at home for the first time this season thanks to a grant from the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority as both Greenwood Soccer and Baseball Fields are now lighted. Asheville is scheduled to play six home matches at night this year.
“The group is extremely excited for the 2014 season! Including pre-season, we open with seven consecutive home matches where we hope to connect with students, faculty, youth players, adult league players, parents, community members, and UNC Asheville supporters,” declared Kern. “We are especially thankful to the Buncombe Country Tourism Development Authority for funding the light project at Greenwood Soccer Field.”
Asheville plays three exhibition matches at home before starting the regular season. The Bulldogs hosts Appalachian State (Aug. 15), Charlotte (Aug. 20) and Clemson (Aug. 23) in exhibition tilts. The match with Charlotte will start at 5 p.m. with the Clemson game scheduled for a 6 p.m. kick-off.
The regular season starts on Aug. 29 at Greenwood Field when the Bulldogs entertain USC Upstate. Asheville’s homestand continues with matches vs. Brevard College (Aug. 31), VMI (Sept. 5) and Jacksonville (Sept. 7).
The Bulldogs first matches away from home come at the Georgia Southern Invitational. Asheville faces Mercer (Sept. 12) in the first round, followed by a game vs. the Eagles (Sept. 14).
Asheville begins Big South Conference play at High Point on Sept. 27. The Bulldogs return to Greenwood Field for league matches vs. Radford (10-1) and Gardner-Webb (10-4) before hitting the road to take on defending BSC champion Coastal Carolina (Oct. 11).
Kern’s club will face Winthrop at Greenwood Field on Oct. 18 before traveling to Northern Kentucky (Oct. 22) and Liberty (Oct. 25).
The Bulldogs final two home matches at Greenwood Field come against Massachusetts (Oct. 30) and league foe Longwood (Nov. 2).
Games at league foes Presbyterian College (Nov. 5) and Campbell (Nov. 8) complete Asheville’s regulars-season schedule.
This year’s Big South Conference Tournament begins with quarterfinal matches at home sites on Nov. 11. The semifinals (Nov. 14) and championship match (Nov. 16) are scheduled for Bryan Park in Greensboro.
