ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team began practice today as the Bulldogs look forward to the 2014 season.

Head Coach Frederico Santos begins his fourth season at the helm of the Bulldog program. Asheville returns three starters and six letterwinners from last year’s 17-14 squad. The Blue & White will have to fill some spots as the Bulldogs have to replace eight letterwinners and four starters from 2013.

“We will have some challenges trying to replace some very good players from last year’s club,” admitted Santos. “However, I really like the freshman class we’ve brought into the program plus we have a solid group of returners. We have plenty of work to do but have some real potential for this year and the future.”

Asheville will compete in four tournaments before Big South Conference play begins on Sept. 26 at Gardner-Webb. The Bulldogs open the season at the end of the month when they take part in the Clemson Invitational (Aug. 29-30). Santos’ club opens the season vs. USC Upstate and Troy on Aug. 29 before facing Clemson the following day.

The Bulldogs home opener at Justice Center will be against mountain rival Western Carolina on Sept. 16 at 7 p.m.
