CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men’s soccer team is a preseason pick to finish in ninth place this year in the Big South Conference. The preseason poll is voted on the coaches of the Big South and was announced by the league today.
Asheville finished the 2014 season with a 5-14-0 overall record and 2-8-0 mark in league play. One of the Bulldogs two league wins was a 1-0 victory over eventual league champ Coastal Carolina. It would be the only league contest the Chanticleers would lose all season as they advanced to the “Sweet 16” of last year’s NCAA Tournament.
The Blue & White return six starters and 15 letterman from last year’s club. Asheville lost seven contests by just one goal in 2013, including five on a goal scored in the final 10 minutes or overtimes.
Heading up this year’s returnees include six seniors. They include goalkeeper Dan Jackson, defender Paul Egle, forward Quentin Reynolds, midfielder Joey Cutting, midfielder Patrick Phillip and defender A.J. Iiames.
Asheville opens up exhibition play on Friday at Carolina Day School when the Bulldogs take on Appalachian State starting at 1 p.m. The regular season begins at home at Greenwood Field against USC Upstate on Aug. 29.
Asheville opens Big South Conference play at High Point on Sept. 27.
