KNOXVILLE, TENN. - Tennessee scored 12 unanswered runs against UNC Asheville's bullpen as the Volunteers downed the Bulldogs 12-3 in non-conference action Tuesday night at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Bulldog starter Drew Spear pitched the first four inning and did not give up a run or hit. He walked four and struck out two and left the game in front, 3-0.
Asheville (15-33) scored all of its runs in the fourth inning to grab an early lead. Beau Zinman led the inning off with a walk. He went to third on a Cody Buch double to put runners on second and third. Catlin Carter's sacrifice fly scored Zinman for a 1-0 Asheville lead.
Danny Baatz's grounder was booted by UT shortstop Zac Osborne for two errors on one play. Buch scored on the errors to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. Justin Schumer's groundout later in the inning plates Jordan Lurie for a 3-0 advanatage.
Tennessee would tie the game after Spear was taken out in the fifth inning. The Vols got three hits and take advantage of an Asheville throwing error to knot the game at 3-3.
The home team took the lead for good with a big seventh inning. Tennessee scored six times on five hits and took advantage of two walks to lead 9-3.
UT scored three more times in the eighth for a 12-3 lead.
Schumer and Buch led the Bulldogs at the plate with two hits each.
UNC Asheville finishes up the regular season with a critical Big South Conference series against Gardner-Webb at McCormick Field starting on Thursday at McCormick Field at 1 p.m. The three-game series will continue of Friday at 1 p.m. and finish up Saturday at 1 p.m.
