ASHEVILLE,
N.C. – The No. 1 seed Winthrop Eagles earned a 4-0 decision over the No. 4 seed
Radford Highlanders on Friday at Asheville Racquet Club South, earning a berth
in the championship match of the 2012 Big South Conference Women’s Tennis
Championship on Saturday.
With the win
the Eagles improve to 12-10 on the year while Radford finishes the season with
a mark of 17-7.
Winthrop’s
No. 1 doubles of Yasmine Alkema and Andressa Garcia won an 8-3 decision over
Radford’s No. 1 while the Eagles’ combination of Ekin Gunaysu and Camille Amrani
took out the Highlanders’ No. 3 team 8-2, earning the doubles point for WU.
Gunaysu then
defeated Taylor Newman of Radford 6-1, 6-1, to put Winthrop up 2-0 in the
match. Alkema earned a 6-1, 6-0, decision over the Highlanders’ Petra Dajevic
to increase WU’s lead to 3-0.
Winthrop’s
Garcia then won the No. 2 singles flight 6-2, 6-3, to give the Eagles the
victory.
The Eagles
will face the winner of Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina on Saturday morning.
