SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Freshman Paige Trent scored three goals to lead UNC Asheville to its first win of the season as the Bulldogs blasted USC Upstate 5-1 at County University Stadium.
The Bulldogs (1-3) got two goals from Trent in the first half to help stake the Blue & White to a 3-0 halftime lead. It was Asheville's first non-conference road win since the 2009 season.
"Our players really played well and deserved to get the victory tonight," commented Bulldog coach Michelle Demko. "We did a great job with our ball possession and were constantly on the attack throughout the game."
Demko had praise for Trent's play.
"Paige has played well all year and has been close to scoring some goals," declared Demko. "Tonight was a great night for her as she worked hard and found the net three times."
Asheville took charge early in the match with two quick goals.
Trent took a pass from Kaitlyn Eckert and went by a defender to score her first career goal at the 11:06 mark for a 1-0 lead.
Eckert made it 2-0 in the 12th minute. After Upstate was called for a foul, Eckert scored on a free kick from 20 yards out to pad the lead to 2-0 at the 12:32 mark. It was the sophomore forward's second goal of the season.
Trent added her second goal of the game right before halftime as she scored unassisted at 44:18 to give Asheville a 3-0 halftime lead.
The freshman picked up her third goal and the hat trick in the 53rd minute. She took advantage of a Spartan miscue in the back and scored at 53:35 to increase Asheville's lead to 4-0.
USC Upstate got on the board in the 56th minute when a shot from Erica Kotterer sneaked into the goal to cut the Bulldog lead to 4-1.
Freshman Bria West earned her first goal of her career to finish the scoring. Kennedy Garrett sent a pass to West, who scored at 66:51.
The Bulldogs out-shot the home team, 22-8. Heather Muller made one save to earn her first win of the year.
