ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville women's basketball team is back in action Saturday afternoon when the Bulldogs host Gardner-Webb at Kimmel Arena starting at 2 p.m.
Saturday's game will be broadcast locally on WPEK Radio (880-AM) with the pre-game show starting at 1:45 p.m. The game can be seen via video-streaming at www.uncabulldogs.com under the multimedia tag.
Both teams enter Saturday's game searching for their first Big South Conference win of the year. Asheville (2-15, 0-6 BSC) hopes to snap at eight-game overall losing streak, while the Runnin' Bulldogs (7-10, 0-6 BSC) have lost five in a row.
The Bulldogs lost to Big South-leader Presbyterian College Thursday night, 56-49 at home. Asheville trailed by 19 midway through the second half before making a gallant run in the end but fell short. Gardner-Webb has had a week off after losing a close 60-55 decision to Winthrop at home last Saturday.
In the loss to Presbyterian College, Kelli Riles scored 20 points and collected 13 rebounds. She was a perfect 8-for-8 from the field. Leading scorer Shonese Jones didn't play the last 19 minutes of the game against the Blue Hose after going down with a knee injury. She is doubtful for Saturday's game.
Junior guard Jasmine Dale leads the GWU attack with an 11.2 scoring average. She's knocked down 41 three-pointers and is shooting .476 from beyond the arc.
The Bulldogs hit the road after Saturday's game with the Runnin' Bulldogs. Asheville travels to Charleston Southern (Jan. 24), Coastal Carolina (Jan. 26) Gardner-Webb (Jan. 31) and Presbyterian College (Feb. 2) before returning home to face Charleston Southern (Feb. 7).
Senior center Kelli Riles continues to move up the career ladder on the Big South's all-time list for rebounds. Riles moved into sixth place on Thursday night when she collected 11 rebounds. She now has 924 career rebounds as she moved past Radford's Carrie Fertitta who had 915 in her career. Fifth place isn't far away as Liberty's Megan Frazee grabbed 951 rebounds from 2005-09. Kelli leads Asheville and is third in the Big South in rebounds with a 10.1 average. She's second on the club in scoring with a 10.2 average and has posted six double-doubles on the year. In addition to her milestones in rebounding, Riles is knocking on the door for points. Kelli has 895 points and needs just 105 to reach 1,000 career points. If she can get to 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds, Riles will be just the second player in school history to accomplish that feat and first in the Division I era.
UNC Asheville leads the all-time series with Gardner-Webb 19-10. The teams split last season. Asheville defeated GWU on Jan. 21 at Kimmel Arena, 72-61. The Runnin' Bulldogs downed the Bulldogs in Boiling Springs, 69-52.
Asheville looks to end a 17-game losing streak in BSC play. The Bulldogs last league win was against Gardner-Webb last year in Kimmel.
Three of Asheville's last five league losses have been by seven points or less.
First-year Bulldog head coach Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick was once a Gardner-Webb fan as her sister Angell Kirkpatrick Benson was the Runnin' Bulldogs volleyball head coach.
