ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Freshman forward Will Weeks scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead UNC Asheville to a 69-58 Big South Conference win over visiting High Point Saturday afternoon.

Jeremy Atkinson added 17 points and eight rebounds. He also hit a 65-footer from the left side at the end of the first half to give the Bulldogs (11-10, 5-2 BSC) some momentum going into halftime.

The Panthers (9-10, 4-3 BSC) were led by four players in double figures. Corey Law led the High Point attack with 13 points and seven rebounds. Lornezo Cugini added 11 points. Adam Weary and John Brown finished with 10 points each.

Asheville trailed 28-26 at halftime but went on a 10-point run early in the second half to take the lead for good at 43-36. Reserve center Jaleel Roberts came off the bench to spark the run. Roberts had six points during the run, including a dunk off a feed from Hornsby on a fast-break.

The Bulldogs built the lead to as much as 10 points with six minutes left on two free throws from Weeks. Asheville led 58-48 before the Panthers made one more push.

High Point crept to 62-58 on a Weary jumper with 2:17 left. The Panthers had a chance to get closer after an offensive foul on Weeks. But Asheville got a stop and pushed the lead to 64-58 on an Atkinson follow with 1:11 left.

The Bulldogs got a steal from Trent Meyer who fed Weeks who scored at the one-minute mark to pad the lead 66-58. Asheville got three more free throws in the final 30 seconds to seal its third straight win.

High Point scored eight straight points midway through the first half to race to a 22-14 lead. Law had five points during the run, including two big dunks.

The home team closed to 28-26 at halftime on Atkinson's 65-foot shot.

"We played very well in the second half today," commented Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach. "I thought our defense did a nice job, and we got contributions from everybody.

"This is a big win for us because High Point has a good team," added Biedenbach. "I really like the way we competed and battled. "

"We needed Jaleel Roberts and he really responded," Biedenbach also said. "You never know when your number is going to be called and Jaleel answered the call today."

Asheville shot just .333 (10-of-30) from the field in the first half but improved dramatically to .619 (13-of-21) in the second half.

The Bulldogs start a two-game road trip on Wednesday at Presbyterian College starting at 7 p.m. High Point begins a two-game homestand with Longwood on Wednesday, also at 7 p.m.
