ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Campbell pitcher Ryan Mattes pitched a complete game four-hitter against UNC Asheville on Friday afternoon, as the No. 29 ranked Camels earned a 4-1 victory over the Bulldogs at Greenwood Field in the first game of a Big South Conference series between the two schools.

Asheville starter Dean Roland (0-5) was credited with the loss, tossing eight innings for the Blue & White. The Bulldogs drop to 8-15 overall and 1-3 in the Big South with the setback.

“Mattes pitched an outstanding game, working us in, working us out and getting ahead in counts,” said Asheville skipper Tom Smith. “Dean Roland did a good job, and when we get that kind of performance from him we’ve got to be better offensively.”

Campbell improves to 19-3 on the season with a 3-1 mark in league play. Mattes (5-1) gave up one run on four hits with three strikeouts in the contest. At one point he retired 19 Bulldogs in a row.

Designated hitter Billy Creighton went 1-for-3 at the plate for Asheville, driving in the Bulldogs’ only run. Catcher Ian Graham led off the game with a single up the middle, finishing the day going 1-for-4 with a run scored.

Third baseman Elijah Trail went 2-for-4 for the Camels, driving in a run on a home run in the fourth inning.
