ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team played its last spring tournament at Tennessee this past Saturday and ending up winning the tournament as the Bulldogs beat the Volunteers from the Southeastern Conference twice.

The four-team tournament also consisted of Appalachian State and Western Carolina. The round-robin tourney had each team playing each other once two sets each. The Bulldogs beat UT 2-0 in the first match and then split with ASU and WCU in their next two matches.

The teams were then seeded after the round-robin matches and had a play-off. Asheville was seeded second and beat the Mountaineers, 2-0 and then knocked off the Lady Vols, 2-0 to claim the spring tournament.

The Bulldogs played the tournament without junior middle blocker Meredith Foster and junior libero Alex Stewart.

Asheville got great play from everyone in Knoxville, according to head coach Frederico Santos.

“We really did a great job at Tennessee this weekend,” declared Santos. “All three of those teams are strong opponents and we more than held our own with them.

“We got an unbelievable performance from Rachel Wells. Her serving and defense was just awesome. Rachel’s serving gave all three teams we played fits,” added Santos. “Anna Moore was just unbelievable in the middle.”

The Bulldogs are thinking of playing one more match before finishing up the spring season.

“We may play one more match but it’s been a good spring,” commented Santos. “Our team has worked hard and developed some chemistry that should pay dividends this fall.”
