ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men’s basketball team has learned that it will face national power Duke in the first round of the Preseason NIT at historic Cameron Indoor Stadium on Monday, Nov. 18 starting at 7 p.m. The game with the Blue Devils will be televised nationally by ESPNU.
Asheville is in a four-team quadrant with Duke, East Carolina and Norfolk State. The Bulldogs play either East Carolina or Norfolk State the following day at Cameron. First-year coach Nick McDevitt’s club is assured of two more games in the Preseason NIT the following week (Nov. 25-30) either at Madison Square Garden or at another site.
Duke went 30-6 last season and advanced to the Elite Eight before falling to eventual national champion Louisville.
McDevitt is looking forward to the challenge of playing Duke and legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski. The veteran Duke head coach is college basketball’s all-time leader in victories with 957 wins.
“We’re very excited about playing Duke in one of college basketball’s legendary arenas at Cameron Indoor Stadium,” declared McDevitt. “It’s an honor to play Duke and go against Coach Krzyewski, who is not only the all-time leader in victories in college basketball but has coached the USA National Team to gold medals in the last two Olympics.
“This will be a tremendous challenge for our program, but it will make us a better basketball team by playing a team the caliber of Duke,” added McDevitt.
UNC Asheville and Duke have met just once on the hardwood and that came in the 2008-09 season with the Blue Devils recording a 99-56 win in Durham.
