ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop scored three times in the second half en route to a 4-0 Big South Conference victory over UNC Asheville Wednesday night in men’s soccer action.

The loss eliminates the Bulldogs’ (5-13, 2-7-0) chances of getting into next week’s Big South Conference Tournament.

The homestanding Eagles (11-6-1, 5-5-0) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute when Max Hasenstab scored his ninth goal of the season.

Asheville trailed 1-0 at halftime before Winthrop exploded in the second half. The Eagles scored in the 48th minute on a goal from Patrick Barnes to push the lead to 2-0.

Achille Obougou scored his team-leading 10th goal of the season off a corner kick to push the lead to 3-0 at 64:34.

Sean Comer finished the scoring in the 81st minute to push the margin to 4-0.

One of the best chances for Asheville came in the 71st minute when a cross was delivered into the box as Kenny Lingerfelt made his run. The cross was a tad strong and Lingerfelt reached out to try and redirect the ball into the open net but got around it too much and the ball went back in front of goal as the Eagles cleared the ball away.

Zak Davis started in goal for the Bulldogs and played the first 45 minutes as he made six saves. Dan Jackson replaced him at the half and also ended up with six saves. Winthrop finished with a 28-8 advantage in shots.

Cole Schwietering nearly put the Bulldogs up early as his header from 10 yards straight on from goal in the eighth minute hit the crossbar and Winthrop was able to clear the ball away.

UNC Asheville remains on the road as it will end the regular season at Radford on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m.
