RADFORD, Va. – The UNC Asheville women’s swim team posted some solid results on Friday in the second day of the Highlander Invitational at Dedmon Center Pool.
The Bulldogs are in fourth place in the six-team meet with 328 points. Asheville will finish the three-day meet on Saturday.
“I was very happy with the team's fight tonight. This is our first three-day preliminaries and finals meet and they are responding well with very little rest,” stated Bulldog coach Elizabeth Lykins. “We look forward to having a strong finish on Saturday.”
The Bulldogs started off strong by earning a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay. The quartet of Reid Jackson (28.12), Alessandra Troncoso (30.17), Alexandra van Dorsten (26.66) and Ashley Ireland (24.18) posted a team record with a time of 1:49.13.
Galen Broido finished in second place in the 400 individual medley by improving her time from the morning to the evening by more than seven seconds as she had a time of 4:33.37. Senior Kristen Lawson came in ninth and won the B file by swimming a lifetime best by more than 10 seconds at 4:50.14
In the 100 butterfly, van Dorsten took seventh at 1:00.85. Ireland came in 10th at 1:01.01.
Broido had a solid performance in the 200 freestyle with a third-place finish with a time of 1:56.31. Van Dorsten took sixth at a time of 1:57.75.
Troncoso slipped off the block at the start and battled back to finish in second place in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:07.64.
In the 100 backstroke, freshman Kenzie Hart came in seventh with a time of 1:01.41. Jackson finished 10th at 1:01.88.
Asheville finished the evening with an eighth-place finish in the 800 freestyle relay. The relay team of Kristen Lawson, Rachel Van Noordt, Ashley Ireland and Galen Broido posted a time of 8:14.76
