BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Playing in their second Big South Conference road game of the season the UNC Asheville women’s basketball team dropped a 67-59 decision to Campbell on Thursday evening at the Gilbert Craig Gore Arena.

The Bulldogs fall to 4-5 on the year with a 1-1 mark in Big South play while Campbell improves to 5-2 and 2-0 in the league. Asheville has also dropped five in a row to the Camels.

Junior guard Brittany Gwyn led the way for the Bulldogs, scoring 14 points and dishing out three assists. Paige Love scored 12 and Tianna Knuckles had 10 for the Blue & White, with Leah Wormack leading the team in rebounds with eight.

Campbell was led offensively by RaeChaun Edwards, who tallied 20 points overall, converting 11-of-12 free throws. Edwards also tallied five assists in directing the Camel offense, with Jessica Moore scoring 15 and Roslyn Presley scoring 11. Amanda Coffer tallied a game-high three blocks in the contest with Moore tallying a game-high nine rebounds.

The Bulldogs shot 31.1 percent on the evening, converting 19-of-61 field goals. Campbell shot 15-of-50 from the floor, but converted 32-of-41 free throw attempts. Asheville was 14-of-21 from the line.

Asheville out-rebounded the Camels 44-43 in the contest.

The first half saw the Camels jump out to a 13-5 lead over the first five minutes of the frame, as Brittany Gwyn scored all five points for the Bulldogs during that span. Asheville pulled to within six points with 11:36 to go in the contest, with Tianna Knuckles hitting a big 3-pointer to make the score 15-9.

Campbell would push its lead to 22-11 over the next four and a half minutes, capped off by a Jessica Moore trey from the corner to put the Camels up by 11. However, Asheville would not go away quietly, as the Bulldogs went on an 8-4 run to cut the lead to 26-19 with 3:42 to go in the first.

The Bulldogs would tie the game at 28-28 with 1:48 to go when Paige Love hit a trey from the top of the key, only to see Raechan Edwards answer with a 3-pointer of her own at the other end. After fighting back to tie the game the Bulldogs saw the Camels finish the frame on a 7-2 run to take a 35-30 lead into the break.

The Bulldogs came out strong in the second half, going on a 10-4 run to take their first lead at 40-39 with 16:44 to go in the game. Over the next five minutes the two teams traded the lead back and forth until Edwards sank a fast break layup to put CU up 46-44 with 11:39 to go in the contest.

Asheville tied the game at 50 points apiece on a Gwyn 3-pointer as the shot clock expired with 9:24 to go, but the Camels retook the lead two minutes later on a Moore trey from the left wing.  The Bulldogs offense went cold over the next five minutes, failing to make a basket to fall behind 58-50 with 3:54 remaining.

Once again the two teams would trade buckets back and forth over the final four minutes, but the Bulldogs could not close the gap as they fell by the final of 67-59.

UNC Asheville will host North Carolina A&T on Tuesday, Dec. 17, at Kimmel Arena in the Bulldogs’ next contest. The two teams last met on Dec. 16, 2006, with the Aggies earning a 65-61 victory in Greensboro, N.C.
