ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville senior D.J. Cunningham has been invited to the Portsmouth (Va.) Invitational Tournament, an event that annually invites 64 college senior basketball players to play before NBA and European scouts.
The Portsmouth event is limited to seniors. Some of the top seniors, such as Creighton’s Doug McDermott, usually skip the tournament in favor of the NBA Pre-Draft Camp, which is held in early June.
All NBA teams will have scouts and executives evaluating talent inPortsmouth.
The 6-foot-10-inch Cunningham averaged 11.6 and 9.9 rebounds per game for the Bulldogs last season. He is scheduled to arrive in Portsmouth on Tuesday. The tournament begins Wednesday and runs through Saturday. The 64 players are divided into eight teams.
“We are excited for D.J.,” UNC Asheville coach Nick McDevitt said. “This is a great opportunity for him.”
