LYNCHBURG, Va. – Holding on to a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth inning the UNC Asheville baseball team gave up three runs to Big South Conference foe Liberty on Saturday afternoon, falling 4-2 to the Flames at Liberty Baseball Field.
With the win the Flames improve to 34-10 overall and 18-1 in league play while Asheville falls to 12-31 on the season with a 4-15 mark in the Big South.
Junior reliever Nick Schavone was credited with the loss for the Bulldogs to fall to 1-3 on the season, allowing three runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning of work. Freshman hurler Joe Zayatz got the start for Asheville, allowing one run on four hits in seven strong innings of work.
The Bulldogs tallied two runs on six hits with no errors while the Flames plated four runs on seven hits with zero errors.
Offensively third baseman Robert McIntosh and shortstop Derek Smith each went 1-for-3 at the plate with a run batted in for the Blue & White.
Liberty’s Shawn Clowers earned the victory in a relief appearance to improve to 6-0 on the season. Clowers pitched two shutout innings with three strikeouts and two walks. Ashton Perritt picked up his 11th save of the season tossing a scoreless ninth.
Second baseman Ryan Seiz drove in a pair of runs when he homered to left center in the eighth to give the Flames a 4-2 advantage. Rightfielder Will Shepherd was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI, with shortstop Dalton Britt going 1-for-2 with a run batted in.
The two teams will close out the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. Sophomore Corey Randall will get the start for Asheville while Liberty will throw Parker Bean.
