ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Four in-season tournaments plus a home match against Western Carolina highlight the 2014 UNC Asheville volleyball schedule. Head Coach Frederico Santos announced the 29-match schedule on Wednesday.
“We believe we have a challenging schedule that will prepare us for the Big South Conference regular-season race plus the league tournament,” stated Santos. “We’re excited about our home schedule with non-conference matches against Western Carolina and Wofford plus our league matches. The Justice Center gives us a great home-court advantage. Our team really enjoys playing at home.”
The Bulldogs begin the season at the Clemson Invitational the weekend of Aug. 29-30. Asheville opens with USC Upstate on Aug. 29 and then takes on Troy and Clemson the following day.
Santos’ club heads to the Kennesaw State (Ga.) Invitational the next weekend (Sept. 5-6). The Blue & White have a first-time meeting with Big 10 power Purdue on Sept. 5 as the Boilermakers reached the Elite Eight last season. Asheville will compete against Kennesaw State and Elon on Sept. 6.
The Bulldogs travel to North Carolina Central on Sept. 9 before going back to the state of Georgia for their next tournament. Asheville takes part in the Georgia Invitational in Athens on Sept. 12-13. The Blue & White face Georgia on Sept. 12 before a match against N.C. State and a first-time meeting with Harvard the next day.
Asheville’s first of nine matches at Justice Center in 2014 will be against mountain rival Western Carolina on Sept. 16.
The final in-season tournament for Asheville comes in Jacksonville, Fla., the weekend of Sept. 19-20 when the Bulldogs compete in the North Florida/Jacksonville Invitational. The two Jacksonville-based schools will co-host the tourney. Asheville takes on Jacksonville on Sept. 19 and then faces Nicholls State and North Florida on Sept. 20.
The Bulldogs' final non-conference match is at home against Wofford on Sept. 23. Big South Conference play begins with a road match at Gardner-Webb on Sept. 26.
Asheville’s first home conference match will be against defending league champion Radford on Oct. 3, followed by a meeting with Liberty the next day.
Santos and the Bulldogs have a three-game homestand in mid-October vs. Gardner-Webb (Oct. 17), Charleston Southern (Oct. 24) and Coastal Carolina (Oct. 25). Asheville’s final home matches of the season take place Nov. 7 vs. Presbyterian College and Nov. 8 against Winthrop.
