ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Georgia placed four players in double figures and defeated a cold-shooting UNC Asheville Bulldog squad 79-58 Tuesday night at Stegeman Coliseum.

Asheville (0-4) was led by John Williams with 14 points and seven rebounds. Sean Smith finished with 12 points, while Chris Stephenson chipped in 10. The Bulldogs shot just 37 percent (24-of-65) from the field and made 21 turnovers. Asheville shot 21 percent from the three-point line (5-of-23).

Georgia (2-2) was paced by a career-high 20 points from Ricky McPhee. He was 8-of-9 from the field and 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. Travis Leslie contributed 17 points. Trey Thompkins added 16 points. Albert Jackson finished with 10 points.

"We're just not playing very well right now," commented Bulldog coach Eddie Biedenbach. "We had way too many turnovers. The turnovers were especially frustrating as they came at the wrong time and led to a lot of easy points for Georgia.

"We also didn't shoot well from the field, the three-point line and from the free throw line," added Biedenbach. "We're playing hard, but we've got to start playing better. We had open looks tonight and just couldn't make anything."

Georgia became the third straight opponent to shoot better than 50 percent from the field against the Bulldogs. The homestanding Bulldogs went 32-of-62 from the field for 52 percent.

"We've got to start playing better defense," declared Biedenbach. "We're just not getting the job done on the defensive end."

Asheville had another tough start. Georgia forced six straight Bulldog turnovers and used that to score 14 straight points to build a quick 16-2 lead before the game was three minutes old. Leslie scored seven of the 14 points during the run.

Asheville fought back and crept to 20-13 on a lay-up from Matt Dickey with 11 minutes left in the first half.  The Bulldogs had a chance to get closer but missed on four straight possessions.

Georgia once again went on a decisive run. The homestanding Bulldogs scored 14 straight points over a two-minute stretch to lead 34-13 at the six-minute mark. McPhee had two treys during the run.

Georgia led 39-22 at halftime. Asheville had 14 turnovers in the opening half and allowed Georgia to scored 19 points off those turnovers. The Bulldogs shot 35 percent (9-of-26) from the field, while Georgia knocked down 55 percent of its field goal (16-of-29) attempts.

"In the first half, we got off to a bad start and then battled back and had chances to get closer," stated Biedenbach. "But we couldn't sustain anything and then just started turning the ball over."

In the second half, Georgia went on a 12-2 run to open the half as it built the lead to 51-24 and Asheville could get no closer than the final margin.

UNC Asheville hosts Furman Friday night at Justice Center starting at 6 p.m. The game will be televised locally by WMYA-Channel 40.
