RADFORD, Va. - The UNC Asheville women's swimming team is competing at the Highlander Invitational this weekend. Action began today at the Dedmon Center Natatorium.
The Bulldogs are in fifth place out of six teams after the first day of competition. Asheville has posted 109 points.
Galen Broido took fifth in the 500 yard Freestyle with a lifetime best of 5:09.18. She beat her previous lifetime best by more than six seconds. Broido established another lifetime best in the 200 yard Individual Medley at a time of 2:14.20. She finished seventh in the event, despite having to swim just 10 minutes after her 500 event.
Asheville finished sixth in the 200 yard Freestyle Relay. The team of Ashley Ireland, Chole Carr, Galen Broido and Alessandra Troncoso posted a time of 1:42.68.
The final relay of the day was the 400 yard Indivudal Medley with Broido, Carr, Troncoso and Ireland. They set a new school record of 4:07.19, where Carr split the second fastest 100 breast of anyone at the meet with a time of 1:07.36.
"I am very proud of how the team learned from the morning swims and executed corrections this evening," stated Bulldog coach Elizabeth Lykins. "We are still a young team, but are making strides each session of the meet.
"I am Looking forward to another day of fast swimming tomorrow," added Lykins.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Friday and will finish up on Saturday.
