GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women’s swimming team began the 2013-14 season Friday evening at the All North Carolina Invitational held at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
The Bulldogs are in eighth place after the first day of the two-day invitational. Asheville has accumulated 124 points and in front of four other teams on the day.
“I am happy with the results from this evening. We had some great efforts by the team and are learning more about racing,” declared Bulldog Elizabeth Lykins.
“Ashley Ireland is beginning her junior year campaign well in front of where she was last year,” added Lykins. “Freshmen Erin Riggs' hard work in the pool and weight room is already proving to pay off.
“We look forward to two sessions tomorrow and hope to continue improving as the weekend progresses.”
Galen Broido enjoyed a solid evening. She earned 13 points for the Bulldogs in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:19.94 Freshman Alexandra Van Dorsten picked up four points in the event as she posted a time of 5:32. Freshman Morgan Dickie had a time of 5:34.
Broido was part of a 200 freestyle relay team that finished in 17th place and earned 28 points. Ashley Ireland, Alessandra Troncoso, Broido and Van Dorsten had a time of 1:43.36.
Ireland came in 15th place in the 50 freestyle at a time of 24.92. Reid Jackson picked up a point with a time of 26.23.
The 400 medley relay team earned 26 points for Asheville. The team consisted of Broido, Tronscoso, Van Dorsten and Ireland. The quartet had a time of 4:14.05.
The meet will continue Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
