ASHEVILLE – Bob Hartman, who won 225 games as UNC Asheville’s first basketball coach, died Saturday. He was 84.

The former three-sport letterman at Purdue guided the Bulldogs to appearances in the 1969 and ’71 NAIA tournaments while compiling a record of 225-207 in 15 senior college seasons from 1964-79.

Hartman took over the basketball program at Asheville-Biltmore Junior College in 1962, two years before the school gained status as a four-year institution. Asheville-Biltmore College became UNC Asheville in 1969.

He retired following the 1978-79 season and remained the program’s winningest coach until his record was surpassed by Eddie Biedenbach last season.

Hartman was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 2003.

"Coach Hartman was a great person and a great man who made a tremendous impact on UNC Asheville," commented Biedenbach. "I'm glad I got a chance to know him and his family since I've been here. We will miss him but not foget his legacy."

There will be a memorial service for Hartman on Saturday, Nov. 10 at St. Mary's Church on 337 Charlotte Strett.
