Senior women’s volleyball player Rachel Wells is this week’s recipient of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Athlete of the Week at UNC Asheville.
Each week the school selects a BCBSNC Athlete of the Week upon their performance from the previous week's action.
She currently leads the nation and tops the Big South Conference in digs, averaging 6.42 per set.
Wells had 95 digs in two matches, including setting the school record for digs in a match with 54 against Radford on Saturday afternoon. That followed a 41-dig night against Liberty, where she had 19 digs after the first set.
The school record for digs in a match was 50 set back in 2002 against Western Carolina by former Bulldog Leslie Whitfield.
She also had four assists on the week and one service ace. She served six straight points against Radford on Saturday when UNC Asheville was down 24-18 in the third set, before the Bulldogs eventually won 28-24.
The No. 5 seeded Bulldogs will take on No. 4 seed Liberty on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. as a part of the Big South Volleyball Championship presented by Musco Lighting at the Templeton Center on the campus of Presbyterian College.
