ORLANDO, Fla. - UNC Asheville Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone was named as one of 28 winners of the Under Armour AD of the Year Award (ADOY) today by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). She will receive her award at the James J. Corbett Awards Luncheon on Saturday, June 15, at NACDA's 48th Annual Convention at the World Center Marriott Resort.

Cone is one of four winners in the Division I-AAA category.

NACDA Executive Director Bob Vecchione explained that the ADOY Award is essential because it highlights the efforts of athletics directors at all levels for their commitment and positive contributions to student-athletes, campuses and their surrounding communities.

"Since 1998, NACDA has been highlighting significant contributions made by athletics directors across all divisions of our membership," said Vecchione. "This award allows athletics directors to be recognized not only nationally, but also in their respective communities, which heightens the awareness of their leadership position in the athletics enterprise."

Janet is in her ninth year as Director of Athletics at UNC Asheville, while simultaneously serving as senior administrator for University Enterprises. In 2012, the men’s basketball team won the Big South Conference championship for the second year in a row, and the Bulldogs set a school record for conference and overall wins.

Cone oversaw the successful opening of the Wilma Sherrill Center, which includes Kimmel Arena, and also worked to bring the top-ranked UNC Chapel Hill men’s basketball team to campus for a nationally televised game.  The women’s tennis, men’s tennis, women’s swimming and women’s track and field teams were all honored for their work in the classroom.  Cone created the Athletic Director’s 3.0 + Club, which recognizes student-athletes with a 3.0 or better grade-point average each semester.  This past spring semester saw 120 student-athletes with a GPA of 3.0 or above.

She also revived women’s swimming at UNC Asheville this past year. It marked the first time the athletics department had added a sport in 20 years.

In addition, her leadership helped bring the Charlotte Bobcats NBA basketball team to the Sherrill Center and Kimmel Arena for their fall training camp.

In October of 2007, Cone was named the Division I-AAA Administrator of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators.

NACDA, now in its 48th year, is the professional and educational association for more than 6,500 college athletics administrators at more than 1,600 institutions throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. More than 2,200 athletics administrators annually attend the NACDA Convention. Additionally, NACDA administers 13 professional associations, including six for the separate business units that report directly to the athletics directors.
