For the sixth straight year, UNC Asheville’s student-athletes and coaches helped elementary school students read books over the holidays with its Rocky’s Readers program.

Students are asked to read five books over the break. Each student that reads five books will receive a free ticket for themselves and their parents for the UNC Asheville women's basketball team's game against Liberty on Saturday, Jan. 18 at Kimmel Arena starting at 2 p.m.

Classrooms with 100 percent participation receive a party with the Bulldog women's basketball team. Schools that are participating in the Rocky's Readers program are Buncombe County, City of Asheville and Charter schools.

The women’s swimming team worked with students at W.D. Williams in Black Mountain, while the UNC Asheville Cheer & Dance team read with Enka Middle School. The women’s basketball team read at Pisgah Elementary School. Bulldog teams are scheduled to go to Pisgah Elementary and New City Christian next week.

Each team has spoken about the importance of reading in their lives and how important it is in the student's lives.

The Rocky’s Readers Program is available through a grant by the Enterprise Holdings Foundation.
