CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men’s cross country team was picked to finish in fifth place in this year’s Big South Conference championship meet in November according to the league’s coaches’ preseason poll that was announced earlier this week.

In 2013, Asheville finished right in the middle of the pack in sixth place despite injuries to some of its top runners throughout the season. Seventh-year coach Jesse Norman believes the Bulldogs can finish higher than sixth.

“We had a lot of nagging injuries last year but like the women’s team, we have a lot more depth this season than we’ve had in the past,” declared Norman. “Our team has a lot of veterans on the roster, and we’ve added some talented freshmen that should come in and help us right away.  We’ll have some great competition in training sessions and that will make everyone better.’

Asheville will be led in 2014 by seniors’ Kevin Paradise and Brent Schouler.

The Bulldog harriers open the 2014 season at the Western Carolina Invitational on Friday, Aug. 29. For the third straight year, Asheville will host a home meet at Asheville Christian Academy when it hosts the Cross Country Carnival on Saturday, Sept. 20.

This year’s Big South Championship Meet will be held at Gardner-Webb on Nov. 1.
