ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's and women's cross country teams will run on a Saturday for the first time this year at the Big South Preview at the Blacksburg (Va.) Middle School Course. Radford is the host institution for the meet. The women's 5K race will start at 10:30 a.m., while the women's 8K race is scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m.
Fourth-year coach Jesse Norman looks forward to seeing how his teams fare against Big South Conference competition. The Big South Conference Championships will be held at here on Oct. 30.
"I'm really looking forward to Saturday's meet to see where we stand in the conference," commented Norman. "There will be eight Big South Conference teams in the meet, so we will get a pretty idea what we're up against when we come back at the end of October."
The Bulldog harriers have had two meets this year with some mixed results. Both teams finished fourth at the Western Carolina Invitational on Aug. 27. The teams were at Clemson last Friday (Sept. 17) night with the men taking sixth and the women finishing seventh.
"We're searching for a little more consistency from each team," explained Norman. "I'm really pleased with the progress of our freshmen on both squads. Our veterans are making progress. We are getting a little better each day."
Junior Eliud Chirchir led the Bulldogs at Clemson with a 26th place finish and a solid time of 26:48. John Barringer is having a good senior season and was Asheville's second runner to finish at Clemson with a time of 26:50.
On the women's side, Emma Bussard has been Asheville's top runner in the first two meets. She posted a time of 19:17 at Clemson. Freshman Rachel Carson has run well for Asheville in her rookie season. She had a time of 19:27 at Clemson.
