ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men’s and women’s cross country teams are in action this afternoon when the Bulldog harriers participate in the Blue Ridge Open near Appalachian State starting at 3 p.m.

Both teams will be facing tough fields as more than 30 teams will participate in the meet at the Don Kennedy Trails.

This meet is Asheville’s final one before the Big South Conference championships at VMI on Nov. 2.

“We look forward to Friday’s meet. There’s going to be a great field and it should prepare us for the Big South Conference meet in two weeks,” commented Bulldog head coach Jesse Norman. “We want to start to peak as we go into the conference championships.”

This is the second time in two weeks that the Bulldogs have been headed to Boone. Both teams participated in the Mountaineer Open two weeks ago (Oct. 4). The women’s team finished in second place, while the men came in third  place.

The Bulldog women’s squad finished with 74 points and came in second behind Virginia Tech.  Senior Melanie Kulesz took eighth place to lead the Asheville effort as she posted a time of 18:42.72 on the 5K course.

The men’s team had 93 points and finished behind Virginia Tech and King College. Freshman Brent Schouler took 12th place and was the Bulldogs top runner for the second time this year. He had a time of 26:05.97 over the 8K course.
