ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's and women's cross country teams open the 2010 season at the Western Carolina Invitational this Friday in Cullowhee. The women's race will start at 6:15, while the men's race begins at 6:45.
"We're quite excited about the start of the season," stated fourth-year head coach Jesse Norman. "We've worked hard in our training and it will be good to see where we stack up in a race. I'm really looking forward to seeing how our freshmen run."
The women's squad won't quite be at full strength as Norman will rest sophomores' Clair Powell and Melanie Kulesz. However, the rest of the team will be in action. The Bulldogs will have experience in juniors' Michelle Busse and Emma Bussard running this weekend. Both have enjoyed solid careers for Asheville.
The Bulldogs will also be looking for contributions from freshmen Ginger Buchanan, Rachel Carson and Shelby Lott on Friday.
On the men's side, Asheville should be at full strength. Senior Jay Barringer along with juniors' Eliud Chirchir, Sam Maynard, Kent Rankin and Adam Schnapp will be looking for strong results in the season's first meet. Freshmen Tyler Michael, Sebastian Paniagua and Nick Summers will be running on Friday, as well.
"I like the way we've trained so far," admitted Norman. "The meet at Western Carolina is a perfect way to start the season."
