The Bulldog women's squad had two runners finish in the top nine as the Bulldogs scored 75 points in the meet. Emma Bussard took third place, while freshman Rachel Carson finished in 9th place in the two-mile run. Bussard had a time of 11:52, while Carson posted a time of 12:19.
On the men's side, the Asheville harriers had 94 points. Carlos Lopez topped the Dogs with a time of 16:23 and a 14th-place finish in the 5K race.
"Today was a bit of a mixed bag which is typical for your first race of the year," stated Bulldog coach Jesse Norman.
"On the women's side, I'm really pleased. We didn't run two of our top runners and came fairly close to finishing in second place," Norman also said. "We ran a nice race today. Our younger runners did a real nice job for their first collegiate meet.
"With our men's team, we can and will do better," added Norman. "On the plus side, our freshman runners had solid performances, and we will build from that."
The women's results had Alyska Kalmeijer taking 15th place at 12:13. Erin Putman took 21st (13:17). Kylie Smith posted a time of 14:05 and came in 27th. Freshman Shelby Lott had a time of 14:05, while Jennifer Black (14:20) and Ginger Buchanan (15:02) also competed for the Bulldogs.
On the men's side, freshman Tyler Michael came in 18th at a time of 16:40. Kent Rankin finished right behind hi m in 19th at 16:41. Freshman Nick Summers took 20th (16:42). Sam Maynard finished in 23rd (16:51), while Eliud Chirchir (17:05) was in 28th. Jay Barringer came in 29th (17:20).
Adam Schnapp (17:37), Sebastian Paniagua (18:10) and Chris Murray (19:00) rounded out Asheville's competition.
The Bulldogs will compete next at the Clemson Invitational on Sept. 17.
