Adam Puett is in his sixth year as an assistant coach with the UNC Asheville cross country and track and field programs.
Coach Puett took the reigns of the men’s distance program during the 2015-16 season and under his tutelage the men have made great strides. During the 2015 cross country season, the men continued their program success within the Big South, placing fifth at the conference meet. The Bulldogs were led by junior standout, Dominic Collichio. Under Puett’s guidance, Collichio posted a season-best time of 25:32 at the Asheville Invitational and placed 17th at the Big South Conference Championships, the program’s highest individual finish in years.
In Puett’s first year with the group, the men’s distance team had its most successful indoor track season to date, scoring in every distance event at the Big South Conference Championships. The Championships were highlighted by the Bulldogs’ All-Conference distance medley relay team who placed third overall.
Before taking over the men’s program, Adam helped lead the women's cross country team to a third-place finish at the 2013 Big South Conference Championships. It was the highest finish for the program in 10 years. In that same year, two Bulldogs earned Big South All-Conference honors. At the 2013 Big South Outdoor Championships, the Bulldog women were one of two teams to score in every distance event from the 800m to the 10,000m. That championship was highlighted by Sarah Gentry winning the 800 and 1500 meter races, while Emma Bussard won the 3000 meter steeplechase and set a new Big South Conference meet record.
Before coming to UNC Asheville, Puett served as an assistant coach at WCU for three years. He coached events ranging from the 800 meters to the 10,000 meters, producing 13 All-Conference performers and six Southern Conference champions. He helped lead the Catamount programs to five different league Championships.
As a student-athlete, Adam enjoyed an outstanding career for Western Carolina University. He was the 2005 Western Carolina Male Athlete of the Year and 2006 Southern Conference Outdoor Performer of the Year. He earned All-Conference honors three times in cross country and 11 times in indoor and outdoor track. He was a five-time SoCon Champion in Indoor and Outdoor track and field as well as a four-time NCAA Outdoor Regional qualifier in the 1500 meter. The Alabama native won the Southern Conference 1500 meters for three consecutive years.
Puett graduated from Western Carolina in 2006 with an undergraduate degree in Business Administration before earning his master's in Physical Education from WCU in 2009. During his off time, Adam enjoys reading, listening and playing music, fishing, and camping.
