CONWAY, S.C. - UNC Asheville battled #13 Coastal Carolina close for most of the match before the Chanticleers scored twice late to post a 3-0 Big South Conference win over the Bulldogs Saturday night.
The Bulldogs (1-11-0, 0-5-0 BSC) lost for the 11th straight time. Asheville goalkeeper Dan Jackson made five saves in each half for the Blue & White. CCU held a 28-3 advantage in shots during the match.
"I was real proud of our defensive effort tonight. Our group played hard against a very talented Coastal Carolina team," stated Bulldog coach Matt Kern. "Our defensive communication continues to improve, and we will refocus on defending balls in our defensive third as we get ready for Gardner-Webb on Wednesday."
Kjartin Sigurdsson put the Chanticleers in front early in the match when he scored off a corner kick at 1:38.
Jackson and the Bulldogs defense stiffened after that and wouldn't allow CCU to score again until the 72nd minute.
Ashton Bennett scored the first of his two goals on the night on a header to push the Chanticleer lead to 2-0 at 72:25.
Bennett sealed the CCU victory when he scored at 81:07 to increase the Chanticleer lead to 3-0. Coastal Carolina is now 9-1-2 on the season and 4-0-0 in league play.
UNC Asheville plays next on Wednesday afternoon when the Bulldogs host Gardner-Webb at Greenwood Field starting at 4 p.m. Wednesday's match will be video-streamed at www.uncabulldogs.com.
