ASHEVILLE, N.C. – After suffering a setback on the road against in-state rival UNCG the UNC Asheville men’s soccer team will host Brevard College on Sunday afternoon at Greenwood Field, with game time set for 2 p.m. between the Bulldogs and Tornadoes.
The Bulldogs fell to UNCG 3-0 on Friday evening, playing most of the match a man down to the Spartans. The game was the first of the season for both squads.
In the contest against the Spartans goaltender Dan Jackson made eight saves for the Bulldogs, with UNCG taking 23 shots to just two for the Blue & White.
“We’re looking forward to playing Brevard on Sunday,” said head coach Matt Kern. “Hopefully we’ll improve our ability to beat high pressure defense while also playing faster in the middle and final thirds.”
UNC Asheville is 4-0 in their last four contests against Brevard. The Bulldogs defeated the Tornadoes in the hope opener last season, scoring five goals in the contest, with sophomore Patrick Phillip posting a game-high two scores.
This game will be a preseason contest for Brevard, a NCAA Division II and member of the South Atlantic Conference. However, the match will count as a regular season contest for the Bulldogs.
Junior midfielder Efren E. Escobar is the top returner for the Tornadoes, accounting for eight points on three goals and two assists in 2012. Pauli Jussila will most likely make the start in goal for Brevard, as the senior from Valkeakoski, Finland is coming off of a 36-save season last year.
After Sunday’s contest the Bulldogs will not be at home until Friday, Sept. 20, when they host Howard as part of the 2013 Asheville Invitational.
