Editors Note: With the 2013-24 school year behind us, UNC Asheville's student-athletes will be providing us write-ups to allow everyone to get to know them a little better. Today we meet men's soccer player, AJ Iiames.

AJ Iiames is a red-shirt Junior on the UNC Asheville Men’s Soccer Team. The talented player can play virtually every position on the field, while being a huge asset for the Bulldogs off the field. Anticipating graduating in the fall of 2015, AJ is seeking a Health and Wellness Promotion degree, with a minor in Religious Studies. Possibly being a personal trainer or a soccer coach, AJ has high hopes for his life after college. It’s obvious that he will be making an immediate positive impact on his community after graduation.

Being the Vice President of the UNC Asheville’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), AJ has found a way to stay very involved on campus. In addition to his leadership of the student-athletes, he is also part of E.P.I.C., which is a student-led Bible talk group. Off campus, AJ has volunteered with Eliada Homes and Western Carolina Ministries, with hopes of doing service at local elementary schools in the future. AJ joined SAAC his freshman year after one of his older teammates convinced him to join. He has loved being an influential part of the group ever since. AJ’s fondest SAAC memory was winning the lip-sync competition during Homecoming Week. AJ said, “I had serious feelings of elation when we took down the competition with such little preparation.”

Next year, AJ hopes to see SAAC do more community service as an on-campus student organization. Since UNC Asheville’s sports teams do service separately, he would like to see a joined effort in getting SAAC out int0 the community. AJ picked UNC Asheville because of its fantastic city, Division I soccer, and the church that he formed three years ago with his friends and family.

This summer, AJ will be working at Cedric’s Tavern as a host at the Biltmore Estate. He will also have a part time job with UNC Asheville men’s soccer alum Greg Garrison at The Hop Ice Cream. For vacation, he will be visiting his older brother out in Boulder, Colorado as well as attending a church conference in St. Louis, Missouri.

AJ Iiames is another reason why UNC Asheville athletics is so loved. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to see him play at Greenwood Field this upcoming fall! The ping pong master can’t wait to see you cheering on him and his fellow Bulldog soccer players during the 2014 season.
