ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's soccer returns home to open Big South Conference play against Gardner-Webb Wednesday afternoon starting at 4 p.m. The match will be video-streamed and can be seen for a small fee at www.bigsouthsports.com.

The Bulldogs (2-5-0) enter Wednesday's match trying to snap a frustrating four-game losing streak.  The last three matches have been losses by just one goal, including a 2-1 overtime decision at ETSU Saturday night.

"We're really playing some pretty good soccer but have been just a little unlucky in the past week," commented first-year coach Matt Kern. "We're playing hard and battling but not getting the ball into the back of the net enough.

"Our guys are certainly looking forward to starting play in the Big South Conference," added Kern. "We know we have a tough assignment in Gardner-Webb on Wednesday, but we're so glad to finally play another home match."

The Bulldogs last played at Greenwood Field on Sept. 8 as Asheville downed Brevard 3-0. Kern's club has played its last four matches away from home.

The Runnin' Bulldogs are 2-6-0 on the year and also desperate for a victory. They've lost three straight matches with two of them being by just one goal.

"Gardner-Webb is a lot like us that they've been just plain unlucky in a lot of matches this season," explained Kern. "They're a good club that's well-coached."

Jake Hagedorn continues to lead Asheville in goals scored with three, while Bryan Bartels is tied for the Big South lead in game-winning goals with two. Connor Holzinger is second in the league in assists with three and has five points on the year.

The Bulldogs are looking for their first regular-season win over Gardner-Webb since the 2007 campaign. GWU has won both meetings vs. Asheville, since joining the Big South in 2008. The Bulldogs did pick up a 4-2 win over Gardner-Webb in the quarterfinals of the 2008 league tournament.
