ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Romeo Kabanda and Nicolas Wrobel each had a goal and an assist to lead Gardner-Webb to a 3-0 Big South Conference victory over homestanding UNC Asheville on a wet and windy day at Greenwood Field.
The loss was the Bulldogs (2-6-0, 1-1-0 BSC) fifth straight. Gardner-Webb (3-6-0, 1-1-0 BSC) snapped a three-game losing streak.
"I was disappointed with our play today," commented Asheville coach Matt Kern. "We just didn't handle the rain very well or the fact that we gave up an early goal. Let's give a lot of credit to Gardner-Webb. They just seemed to be a step quicker the entire day. We'll learn from this match and move on to the next game."
The Runnin' Bulldogs scored two goals in the first 18 minutes to grab a quick 2-0 lead. In the fifth minute, Kabanda scored his first goal of the year off a pass from Wrobel to give the visitors a 1-0 lead at 5:05.
In the 18th minute, the duo struck again. This time Kabanda sent a pass to Wrobel. Wrobel then hit a rocket from seven yards out into the upper right hand corner to give GWU a 2-0 lead.
Asheville had chances in the first half as Bryan Bartels was 1-on-1 with the keeper but fired high from six yards out. Freshman Kenneth Lingerfelt hit the goalpost midway through the opening period.
Bulldog goalkeeper Lassi Hurskainen played well for the home team. He made two point-blank saves in the opening half that could have extended Gardner-Webb's lead. Chris Davis was denied on a shot from two yards out, while Wrobel was stopped from five yards out.
The home team just missed early in the second half when Jake Hagedorn had a shot off a corner kick that hit the cross bar.
The Runnin' Bulldogs put the game away at 56:26 when Guy Mbanyamsig sent a perfect cross to John Sargent. Sargent flicked the ball into the goal for a 3-0 GWU lead.
The visitors out-shot Asheville 19-7 and had 10 corner kicks to just four for the Bulldogs. Adam Garcia stopped two shots to earn his third shutout of the season.
Asheville plays next at Longwood Saturday afternoon starting at 5 p.m. Gardner-Webb plays at Clemson next Tuesday (Oct. 5) night at 7 p.m.
