ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Bryan George's goal early in the second half was the only of the game as UNC Asheville knocked off visiting Winthrop 1-0 in Big South Conference men's soccer action Wednesday afternoon at Greenwood Field.

The win by the Bulldogs (4-11-1, 2-5-0 BSC) ended a five-game losing streak. The Eagles fell to 5-11-1 on the year and 3-5-0 inside the league.

"I was glad to see us get the win today," stated Asheville coach Matt Kern. "We've been playing some good soccer and today we put 90 minutes together against a good team. Hopefully, this victory will give us some confidence for Saturday and next week's Big South Tournament."

The match was close the whole way with each team having some good changes. Asheville goalkeeper Lassi Hurskainen made three saves and earned his third shutout of the season.

The first half was scoreless with Winthrop holding a slight edge in shots, 5-4. The Bulldogs had two corner kicks to one for the Eagles.

Early in the second half, Bryan Bartels sent a pass to George. The junior forward then hit a rocket from 10 yards out to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead at 51:17.

Asheville came close to making it 2-0 when a Colton Paschall shot from 20 yards out and hit the cross bar and nearly went into the goal.

Winthrop had some good chances in the final 20 minutes but a header from Andres Pullin was wide and a shot from Miquel Casajuana was tipped away by Herskainen with 10 minutes left.

The Eagles had four corner kicks to none for the Bulldogs in the second half. Each team had five shots.

Asheville travels to Liberty Saturday morning to finish the regular season at 11a.m. Winthrop will play next in the Big South Conference Tournament at High Point on Nov. 11 against an opponent to be determined.
