MACON, Ga. - Mercer scored two goals in each half to defeat UNC Asheville in men's college soccer action Wednesday night at Bears Field.
The Bulldogs (1-8-0) lost their eighth straight match. Ashani Samuels scored twice to lead the Bears to the victory as Mercer improves its record to 5-3-1.
"We knew they were very dangerous on long throws and corners, and we struggled to deal with their preference to play the ball in the air," commented Asheville coach Matt Kern afterwards. "Mercer did a good job pressuring us in the middle third and they deserved the result."
The Bulldogs trailed 2-0 at halftime as Mercer scored twice in the first 17 minutes of the match to lead 2-0. Asheville had the better of play early in the second half but could not get a ball into the back of the net.
"I thought our best soccer was the first 20 minutes of the second half, but we were unable to pull a goal back to make the game more interesting," added Kern.
Mercer out-shot Asheville 19-8. The shots were 10-2 in the opening half before the Bulldogs rebounded in the second half to get six shots on goal.
Rob May, Trey Hemphill and Andrew Sotak had two shots each for the Bulldogs.
UNC Asheville returns home on Saturday to host Big South Conference foe Winthrop at Greenwood Field starting at Noon.
