ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Achille Obougou scored twice to lead Winthrop to a 3-1 Big South Conference men's soccer victory over UNC Asheville Saturday afternoon at Greenwood Field.

The Eagles built a 2-0 halftime lead and survived a nine-shot barrage by the Bulldogs in the second half to pick up their first win at Greenwood Field since the 2006 season.

Stabler Cochrane scored for Asheville in the second half to cut the lead to 2-1.

"I thought possession in the first half was pretty even, but the difference at halftime was our inability to track runners in our defensive third," stated Bulldog coach Matt Kern. "I have to do a better job with our midfielders and defenders when it comes to one-on-one defending.

"The second half I thought we were the better team," added Kern. "We scored a great goal from Stabler Cochrane, but could not find the equalizer. I am glad we were creating more chances, but our finishing needs to be more clinical.  We will continue to work on that in training to get ready for Presbyterian on Wednesday."

Winthrop struck quickly in the match as Alex Isern scored in the eighth minute. Isern got behind the Bulldog defense and had a breakaway. His first shot was stopped by Asheville goalkeeper Dan Jackson but Isern was able to score on the rebound to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead at 8:43.

Obougou scored his first goal and 24:57 off a nice pass from Mason Lavallet to push the lead to 2-0.

In the second half, Asheville seized control of the match and put pressure on the Eagles defense.  The Bulldogs finally broke through when Cochrane scored his first goal of the season off a pass from Kenneth Lingerfelt at 59:26. The sophomore midfielder connected on a shot from 30 yards out to cut the lead to 2-1.

The home team continued to press before Winthrop stopped Asheville's momentum. Isern sent a perfect pass into the goal area that Obougou headed into the back of the net for a 3-1 Winthrop lead at 69:57.

Winthrop enjoyed a slight edge in shots for the match at 16-14. Asheville held a 12-5 edge in corner kicks, including an 8-3 advantage in the second half.

UNC Asheville travels to Presbyterian College Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. match.
