ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's soccer team will be the eighth seed for the 2010 Big South Conference championships and will face regular-season champion High Point on its home field Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.  The match will be video-streamed and can be seen for a small fee at www.uncabulldogs.com.

Asheville finished the regular season with a 4-12-1 overall record and 2-6-0 mark in Big South Conference play. The teams played back on Oct. 16 with the Panthers recording a 3-0 victory at High Point.

"We have a tough draw playing High Point on its home field," stated Bulldog coach Matt Kern. "But playing High Point anywhere would be a tough match. They went 8-0 in the league play which is pretty tough to do."

Kern hopes Asheville learned from the last time it played the Panthers.

"We got hit by a buzz-saw when we played last month," explained Kern. "They scored two goals in the first 20 minutes and if it hadn't been for Lassi Hurskainen (Asheville's goalkeeper) it could have been a lot worse. However, we settled down after awhile and played better. We just need to play 90 minutes of focused soccer on Thursday."

The Bulldogs went 1-1 last week as they recorded a 1-0 victory over Winthrop and then fell at Liberty, 2-0 Saturday on two goals in the second half.

"We are still competing and battling," commented Kern. "It was nice to beat Winthrop on Wednesday and then did a good job competing at Liberty Saturday. We just need to find a way to score some goals and we'll be OK."

This is just the second time the teams have met in the Big South Tournament. And it's a role reversal that Bulldog fans can hope for. In 2001, Asheville won the regular-season title and faced eighth-seeded High Point in the first round. The Panthers upset the Dogs, 2-0 at Winthrop Soccer Complex.
