BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Richie Wall scored the game's only goal in the 76th minute as Gardner-Webb held off UNC Asheville 1-0 in Big South Conference men's soccer action Wednesday evening at GWU Soccer Stadium.
The Bulldogs (3-8-3, 2-3-1) were out-shot 17-8 in the match but controlled much of the second half. Jake Hagedorn fired three shots and Bryan Bartels added two shots for the visitors.
The winning goal came when Wall knocked the ball off Asheville goalkeeper Lassi Hurskainen into the goal for Wall's first goal of the season. The goal came at 75:59.
The Bulldogs would storm back and try to get the equalizer as they would get four shots in the final 10 minutes. Both Bryan George and Bartels had chances in the final three minutes but GWU goalkeeper Scott Krotee would stop each shot to preserve the victory.
Hurskainen would stop five shots for the Bulldogs.
Gardner-Webb (7-6-2, 4-2-0) dominated much of the first half as it had an 8-2 edge in shots. Hurskainen stopped three shots during the opening half.
Asheville returns to Greenwood Field on Saturday afternoon when the Bulldogs entertain Big South foe Campbell starting at 2 p.m.
