BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's soccer team had three players honored by the Big South Conference Wednesday night at the league's awards banquet held on the campus of Gardner-Webb University. The league tournament will begin Thursday as the eighth-seeded Bulldogs take on top-seeded Coastal Carolina at 2:30 p.m.
Senior goalkeeper Lassi Hurskainen and senior forward Bryan Bartels were named second team All-Conference in a vote by the league's coaches. Hurskainen has been brilliant for the Bulldogs in 2011. For the third time in his great career, he has played every minute of every match this season. He enters the tournament ranked second nationally in total saves with 118 and fourth in saves per game at 6.56. Hurskainen has posted three shutouts on the year and has 11 for his career. He has 400 career saves, also second best in school history. It marked the second straight year Hurskainen has been named to the league's second team.
Bartels was Asheville's second leading scorer. The Fairview native has scored five goals with three assists for 13 points. He leads the Bulldogs in shots taken with four. Bartels scored in three consecutive games in early October, including a game-winner in overtime at Radford on Oct. 1
Senior defender J.J. Morrow was the Bulldogs representative on the league's All-Academic team. He has been a starter in the back for Asheville his entire career. Morrow has been an Academic All-American nominee for two straight years.
