ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville senior goalkeeper Lassi Hurskainen was named to the Big South Conference All-Tournament team at the conclusion of the league's championship Sunday afternoon. Liberty won the championship.
Hurskainen stopped nine shots in the Bulldogs 2-0 loss to the Chanticleers last Thursday afternoon. He finishes his spectacular career at Asheville as the school's all-time leader in saves with 409 and second in shutouts with 12. Sunday's honor marked the second straight year Hurskainen earned an all-tournament selection.
Matt Kern's club finished with a deceiving 4-12-3 record in 2011. The Bulldogs played eight teams that will play in the NCAA Tournament later this week. Asheville lost six matches by just one goal, including two in overtime. One of the overtime losses was to the top seed in this year's NCAA Tournament, North Carolina when the Bulldogs fell 2-1 in Chapel Hill. UNC tied the match with 15 minutes left and won early in overtime. Hurskainen stopped 15 shots against the Tar Heels.
