ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville head men's soccer Matt Kern has announced the signing of eight incoming freshmen to national letters-of-intent on Friday.
"We are excited about the eight new student-athletes that will join our program in August of 2012," stated Kern. "I would like to thank Joe Burnett, our assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, for his tireless work through the recruiting process. We feel as though we have added individuals that will strengthen our program, and at the same time be committed to our mission of outstanding academic achievement and high character."
Jaron Bradley is a goalkeeper who is a native of Charlotte and last year played at Hough HS. Prior to his time at Hough, he lettered at North Mecklenburg for three years and played for head coach Paul Kikta. In his senior year, he played at Hough for David Smith. Bradley has been selected to participate in the 2012 Carolina Clash Game in June and earned a spot on the All-State team. He earned All-Region honors and All-Conference honors for three consecutive years (2099-11). Bradley was also named as a Carolina Weekly Super Team selection. He played club soccer for USSDA Charlotte Soccer Academy for Coach Richard Butler.
Erik Casterline is a defender who played at Southwest Guilford in High Point and was a member of the USSDA N.C. Fusion team. . At Southwest Guilford, coached by Rob Szitas, Erik was named team defensive MVP, Co-captain, All conference, All region, and All State Honorable Mention. Erik helped his club team qualify for Finals Week 2011 in Milwaukee, on the way to a final national ranking of sixth.
Rayon Gibbs is a forward/midfielder from Laurel, Mississippi. Rayon attended West Jones High School, where he played for coach Chip Geiger. Gibbs was a MS High School All-Star Selection, a MS High School District MVP, and was a member of the All-District team every year of his high school career.
Emil Gonsalvez will come to UNC Asheville as a midfielder and defender. He joins the Bulldog family from Shattuck-St. Mary's school in Minnesota. Gonsalvez was coached by former UNC Asheville Men's soccer coach Steve Cornish, as well as Coach Tim Carter. In 2011, Emil helped Shattuck to a Minnesota State Championship. In 2009, while in Austin, Texas, he was named as Forza FC's player of the year. In addition, Emil was also named to the Region III Pool team in 2010.
Kyle Lohn is a midfielder from Indian Trail, North Carolina. He attended Union Academy, where he was coached by Vic Johnson. Kyle was named All-Conference and All- Region in 2010. Lohn played his club soccer for Charlotte United Futbol Club under Michael Magno. Kyle was named the Charlotte United player of the year in 2010 and was a member of the Region III pool team.
Forward Trey Hemphill attended T.C. Roberson High School in Asheville and was coached by Rob Wilcher. In the fall of 2011, he was named as a NSCAA High School All-American, All-South, All-Region, and All-State and was the Asheville Citizen-Times Western North Carolina Player of the Year. In addition, Hemphill was tapped as T.C. Roberson's MVP 2011. He played his club soccer for Craig Conger at North Meck Soccer Academy.
Cole Schwietering joins the Bulldogs from Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina. The defender played for James Mountford at Fuquay-Varina High School. In 2010 and 2011, Cole was named to Tri Nine First team All-Conference and 4-A All-Region. He played his club soccer with the USSDA NC Fusion team coached by Marc Nichols.Andrew Sotak also comes to the Bulldogs from Fuquay-Varina, NC. He can play both forward or in the midfield. Sotak played for James Mountford at Fuquay-Varina High School. In 2011, he was named to the All-State team and was the Offensive MVP for Fuquay-Varina. Andrew played his club soccer with USSDA NC Fusion team coached by Marc Nichols.
