ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Nine home matches plus a tournament at Radford highlights the 2012 UNC Asheville men's soccer schedule. The 17-match schedule was announced by third-year head coach Matt Kern on Thursday.
"Our team is really looking forward to the 2012 campaign," stated Kern. "We will certainly be tested with our out- of-conference matches including some good Conference USA, SoCon, MAAC, and Atlantic Sun opponents.
"The Big South took a big step this past year with two teams getting in to the NCAA tournament," added Kern. "The strength of the league should be even better in 2012. Finally, we are looking forward to playing nine of our matches at Greenwood Field in Asheville."
The men of Matt Kern will play two exhibition matches before beginning the regular season. Asheville plays at Elon (Aug. 15) and hosts Davidson (Aug. 18).
After playing just six home matches in 2011, the Bulldogs' first five matches of the season will be played at Greenwood Field. Asheville opens the season vs. Brevard (Aug. 25), and then entertains USC Upstate (Aug. 27), Appalachian State (Aug. 30), UNC Greensboro (Sept. 2) and Big South Conference newcomer Longwood (Sept. 9). The match with Greensboro will be the Spartans first visit to Greenwood Field since the 1995 season.
Kern's club journeys to the Radford Invitational for two matches. The Bulldogs face Marshall (Sept. 14) and Marist (Sept. 16).
Asheville's first true road match comes at Big South rival High Point (Sept. 22). The Dogs final non-conference match will be at Mercer (Sept. 26).
A home match with Winthrop (Sept. 29) starts a stretch of eight consecutive league matches. The Bulldogs will journey to Presbyterian College (Oct. 3) and Coastal Carolina (Oct. 6) before coming home to take on Radford (Oct. 13) and VMI (Oct. 20). The regular-season closes out with two road matches at Campbell (Oct. 27) and Liberty (Nov. 2).
The 2012 Big South Conference Tournament will start with the quarterfinals at the home of the top seeds. The quarterfinal winners will meet for the semifinals and championship match at Bryan Park in Greensboro.
