ELON, N.C. – The home standing Elon Phoenix scored five unanswered goals in the second half of the exhibition opener for the UNC Asheville men’s soccer team on Wednesday evening at Rudd Field, as Jordan Smith posted two goals in the 5-0 victory for the Phoenix.

The Bulldogs were outshot 23-3 in the 90-minute exhibition, with junior Kenneth Lingerfelt registering Asheville’s only shot on goal in the contest. Sophomore Dan Jackson recorded five saves in goal for the Bulldogs, who held the high-powered Phoenix scoreless in the first half.

Elon’s James Brace broke the scoreless tie in the 47th minute, banking a shot off the right post from 20 yards out. Matt Wescoe headed an offering from Mark Berlin to put Elon up 2-0 in the 65th minute. 

Eliot Browarsky scored one minute later, heading in a free kick from Daniel Lovitz to give the Phoenix a 3-0 advantage.

Smith then posted two goals for Elon, one in the 70th and then another in the 84th to give the Phoenix the 5-0 lead.

The Bulldogs will host Davidson on Saturday afternoon at Greenwood Field at 2 p.m. It will be the final exhibition game before the start of the 2012 season for Asheville, which opens up the regular season at home against Brevard on Saturday, Aug. 25.
