ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's soccer team plays its second exhibition match Saturday afternoon at Greenwood Field when the Bulldogs host Davidson starting at 2 p.m. Admission is free.
Asheville played its first exhibition match on Wednesday at Elon and fell, 5-0. The Bulldogs played good soccer for part of the match as the match was scoreless at halftime.
"We played moderately well for the first 45 minutes, and felt like both teams were trying to play good soccer," stated Asheville head coach Matt Kern. "As the game wore on, Elon did a good job of putting a great deal of pressure on us, and we struggled to circulate the ball. It was a beneficial exhibition match and will make us better as we get ready for the regular season."
The Bulldogs will have another tough test against Davidson on Saturday. The Wildcats went 8-8-3 in 2011. One of those victories was a 1-0 victory over eventual national champion UNC Chapel Hill.
"Davidson has a good team coming back," explained Kern. "We hope we can put together a longer stretch of solid play on Saturday."
After Saturday's exhibition match, Asheville takes a week off to prepare for the start of the season. The Blue & White open the regular season with five straight home matches, including the opener vs. Brevard on Saturday, Aug. 25 at 2 p.m.
"We only played six home matches last season, so we're delighted to be at home so much this year," commented Kern.
