ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men’s soccer team will host an in-season tournament for the first time in 25 years starting on Friday as the Bulldogs welcome three other teams to the Land of the Sky for the Asheville Invitational. Tickets for each day are $5 for adults and $3 for children.

Action begins on Friday at 1 p.m. when Georgia Southern takes on Radford from the Big South Conference. The Bulldogs play the nightcap at 3:30 p.m. when they host Howard at Greenwood Field. On Sunday, Howard plays Radford at Noon, followed by Asheville taking on Georgia Southern at 2:30 p.m.

Each win in this weekend’s invitational will count as three points, while a tie will count as one point for each team. Tie-breakers will start with head-to-head, goal differential, goals for, goals against and fewest cards.

“We are really excited to host the 2013 Asheville Invitational this weekend and welcome Howard, Georgia Southern and Radford to Asheville,” stated Bulldog coach Matt Kern. “I expect all four games to be competitive and fun for spectators to watch.”

Asheville (2-3-0) looks for its third win of the year against Howard (0-5-0). The Bulldogs have not played since last Saturday when they lost at unbeaten North Florida, 4-1. The Bison fell at home last Saturday to St. Francis, 4-1.

Radford is 1-2-1 on the year with an impressive 4-2 victory over Appalachian State. Georgia Southern is 2-3-0 in 2013 with wins over Stetson and Gardner-Webb and a close 1-0 loss at Duke.

The last time the Bulldogs hosted an in-season tournament came in 1988 when Asheville welcomed Gardner-Webb, Lenoir-Rhyne and Mars Hill for four matches. Lenoir-Rhyne edged the Bulldogs in penalty kicks to win the tournament.

Kern’s club has played four of its first five matches away from home. Asheville’s only home match was a 3-1 victory over Brevard on Sept. 1.  This weekend’s matches start a four-game homestand for the Blue & White. Asheville opens Big South Conference play next Saturday (Sept. 28) vs. Liberty.

Kenneth Lingerfelt leads the Bulldogs in scoring with two goals and an assist for five points. He has scored a goal in the last two matches. His next goal will give him a career total of nine goals and career point total of 20.
