LEXINGTON, Va. – Kyle Forche scored in the 79th minute as VMI edged UNC Asheville 1-0 in Big South Conference men’s soccer action Saturday afternoon at Patchin Field.
It was another frustrating league loss for the Bulldogs (4-11-0, 1-6-0 BSC). Asheville has lost four league games by just one goal. One loss was in double overtime and the other three losses occurred on late goal in regulation.
Asheville controlled much of the contest as it out-shot the Keydets 13-9 and had nine corner kicks to just four for the home team.
Kenny Lingerfelt led the Bulldog assault on offense as he took six shots with four on target. Stabler Cochrane had three shots for Asheville.
The match was scoreless for most of the contest until the Keydets struck with less than 11 minutes left. Travis Borkey sent a pass into the goal area. Forche was able to head the ball into the back of the goal for a 1-0 VMI lead at 79:04.
The Bulldogs return home Wednesday afternoon to take on Northern Kentucky at Greenwood Field starting at 3 p.m. Asheville stays at home next Saturday (Nov. 2) when it hosts Big South leader and #5-ranked Coastal Carolina at 1 p.m. It will be the final home match of the year, and the school will honor its seniors prior to the game.
