ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men’s soccer team hopes to build on its big win on Saturday over sixth-ranked Coastal Carolina when the Bulldogs travel to Winthrop Wednesday night for a 6 p.m. Big South Conference contest.
Wednesday’s game can be seen on the Big South Digital Network for free under the multimedia tag at uncabulldogs.com.
Asheville (5-12-0, 2-6-0 BSC) is coming off an emotional 1-0 Senior Day win over the Chanticleers Saturday at Greenwood Field. It’s been called the biggest upset in college soccer this season. CCU out-shot the Bulldogs, 25-4, but Asheville’s defense blocked 10 shots and goalkeepers Zack Davis and Dan Jackson made eight saves combined. Paul Egle scored the game-winner on a penalty kick with 13 minutes left.
The win against Coastal Carolina kept the Bulldogs hopes of making the Big South Tournament alive. If Asheville can win at Winthrop Wednesday night and at Radford Saturday afternoon, the Bulldogs will get into the eight-team tournament. A loss or tie in either one of those contests by Asheville will eliminate them from getting into the tourney.
The Eagles are 10-6-1 on the season and 4-5-0 in league play. Winthrop has battled injuries throughout the year but appear to be healthy going into Wednesday night.
“The group is looking forward to playing at Winthrop on Wednesday night. They are a very dynamic attacking team, with two of the best forwards in the league,” stated Bulldog coach Matt Kern. “We will look to have a good collective defensive effort from the opening whistle. Both teams are possession based, so it should be an entertaining match to watch.”
Bobby Castro continues to lead Asheville in scoring with three goals and seven points. Emil Gonsalvez has three goals and all three have been game-winners.
Dan Jackson has done a solid in goal for the Blue & White with a 5-8 record and 1.84 goals against average. He made five saves in the second half on Saturday against CCU.
The Bulldogs lost last year’s meeting in Asheville, 3-1 but won in Rock Hill two seasons ago, 2-0.
